Predecessing organizations and history of foundation

1932        Prof. Zhu Jiahua (1893-1963), who studied in Germany during the 1910s and 1920s, founds from with own funds and donations the first club house for the association of Chinese graduate students of German universities. One year later the construction of the first associationīs house for the newly founded cultural association. 

1933        The association of Chinese graduate students of German universities as well as the German-Austrian-Swiss-Club found the Chinese-German Cultural Association in Nanjing and elect Prof. Zhu Jiahua as their first president.

1934        The German ambassador Trautmann, member of the association, honors Prof. Zhu with the high decoration for his contributions for the Chinese-German relations. Later Prof. Zhu is also given an award by the Academy of Sciences in Berlin.

1936   The Sino-Japanese war breaks out. The cultural association and the association of Chinese graduate students retreat together with the government to Chongqing and Hankou respectively.

Ambassador Trautmann tries in vain to mediate between China and Japan.

The recently finished associationīs house in Nanjing is used for different purposes, like a refugee camp and events of the German community.

    The cultural association after the end of the Second World War

    Oct. 1945   The associationīs house is used as the US-American embassy.

     July  1946  Apart from the building of legislative (???) Yuan, another new associationīs house is built. 

1948        Opening of the building , which is used jointly by the cultural association and the Association of chinese graduate students of German universities.  

Due to the civil war, the situation in Nanjing is becoming more and more instable. The government is retreating from communist groups to Taiwan. The association is following the government.

 Spring 1950 The association is refounded.

1949        Dr. Theodor Strewe organizes the German-Chinese Association e.V. (??) in Berlin, which promotes the new start of Germanīs relations with China and fosters close relations with the cultural association. 

1956        The DAAD appoints the association with the examination of Taiwanese applicants for the DAAD-scholarship.

April 1961   The assciation starts to offer language exams.

 

   The cultural associationīs contacts with Western Germany after 1955.

since 1955  Apart from the selection of applicants for the DAAD scholarship, teh cultural association is also helping many other students planning self-financed studies to organize the necessary formalities. 

                   During 29 years, 233 students who have been examined by the association, receive a DAAD scholarship for studies in Germany. 

1961        To make its work more efficient, three work groups are built inside the association, who are in charge of the academic exchange, the organisation of events and the promotion of economic relations, e.g. help to overcome the language barriers or to search for suitable business partners. Furthermore a finance commission is set up.

1962        Dr. Wiercimok opens the German Cultural Center as representation of the Federal Republic of Germany. A fruitful cooperation develops and the Cultural Assocation is leaving the language exams, which were organized by the association until that point, to the German Cultural Center.

1963       Death of the president of many years and founder Zhu Jiahua. His successor is general Jiang Weiguo (1916-1997).

1965        The association is given the right to notarize official documents and translations.

1965        Renaming of the association to "Sino-German Cultural and Economic Association" ( Chinesisch-Deutscher Kultur- und Wirtschaftsverband)

1981        Foundation of the German Economic Office in Taipei.

The Association has 547 members, 493 Chinese, 42 Germans and 12 organisations. Besides four new work groups are formed. 

1.      Seminar about the German language

2.      Promotion of business contacts

3.      Academic exchange

4.      Legal groundwork of cooperation

    The SGCE during the last ten years

Sept. 1986  Jiang Weiguo becomes general secretary of the National Security Council and resigns from his position of board director due to lack of time. However, he still participates in the association as president of honor. Yang Jizeng (1898-1992) becomes the new president, who has studied at the Technical University of Charlottenburg (today TU Berlin).

Aug. 1988    Dr. Pan Shuren is elected president. Dr. Wang Renyong (received his PHD in 1970 in Heidelberg) is confirmed as representative as well as general secretary. 

Jan. 1990    The association publishes a bilingual (German/Chinese) weekly magazine. 83 issues are published until May 1992. 

Jan. 1993    Dr. Shi Qiyang (1971 PHD in Heidelberg) becomes the new president of the association. Prof. Wang Renyong remains respresentative. Mr. Dr. Wei Guangzheng is elected general secretary. 

1997   Prof. Wang becomes the associationīs president.
